FASHION FILMS WEEK: PARIS

KANER KIVANC

As I watched fashion shows at men’s fashion weeks, a question began to take shape in my mind: wouldn’t it be more accurate to call this period “Fashion Film Week” when fashion houses presented their collections?

Paris Fashion Week began with a simple video of the Berluti collection designed by Kris van Assche. Assche chose not to do a fashion show this season. “I didn’t want to do a digital fashion show. Of course, I love fashion shows, but I don’t think the feelings experienced at that moment can fit into the video.” he says. Can’t say that I disagree. I’ve been to many fashion shows before, so frankly, I can’t capture that feeling in fashion film. But the fact is that the new order expands the boundaries of your dream world with less budget and allows you to reach larger audiences. The biggest innovation Kris Van Assche has brought to the brand is his collaborations. Like last season, this collection draws its inspiration from ceramic artist Brian Rochefort. Assche calls Brian the naughty boy of the ceramic world.

When it comes to Paris, it shouldn’t be surprising to see the Eiffel Tower come across. The Sankuanz video begins with models walking on top of the tower. One of the best music of the season comes from STOLEN, which works with the brand.

Bleumarble Paris is one of my favorite brands lately. Them preaparing a video in the fashion show format, obviously, worked for me. I was able to examine the collection more clearly. Although I like fashion movies, sometimes the details of clothes disappear.

My love for the brand grew even more after watching the Etudes video. The dance trend in fashion weeks continues here as well, but at its most reckless form. Dancing like crazy is almost embodied on models.  It’s hardly possible to not lose oneself when listening to Lorenzo Senni-Discipline of Enthusiasm, anyways.

Angus Chiang’s presentation was also very notable. The designer first dressed the actors and production team of the short film he directed with his designs, and made a live fashion show on the red carpet in Taipei. At the screening, which resembled red carpet interviews, the presenter introduced the outfits to the audience. Later, the video from this event was presented in a nostalgic form under the name “Angus Chiang Autumn-Winter 2021 Awards”.

As the creative director for both JW Anderson and Loewe, Jonathan Anderson, preferred to narrate his collections himself. In the presentation of JW Anderson, Jonathan, did not even prefer to use models and made a presentation through photos and clothes on the rail. Although this method don’t sound super exciting, it was nice to listen to the collection from the designer himself.

EgonLab attended the movie week in horror genre. Although the short film, which lasts about 14 minutes, does not scare much, it leaves a feeling of tension. Film aside, I loved the hand accessories in the collection. Looks, which combines 70s baggy trotters with activewear, are also my favourites.

Dior is also one of the brands that offers fashion show videos instead of shooting fashion films. I remember once again with Dior how much I missed going to fashion weeks. Anne Clark’s Our Darkness, one of my favourite tracks and also the show’s soundtrack, has upped my mood even more. For the presentation of the brand, we can call it “walking works of art”. Kim Jones uses couture techniques extensively in his men’s collections. Adding his collaboration with the painter Peter Doig on top of this, the collection turned into a visual feast.

Phipps’ collection video has been prepared as if it was a trailer for an upcoming movie. It’s about ecological collapse and glacial melting, which is one of the biggest problems in the world right now. It’s obviously good that someone reminded the fashion world of this again.

The youngest models of the season came from Thom Brown. The presentation of the brand reminded the children sitting in the president’s chair on April 23 (National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Turkey). The film is about a group of kids misbehaving at the typewriter in an office setting.

And we finally came to the “and the Oscar goes to…” part. The videos that impressed me the most this season came from Louis Vuitton and KidSuper. The Louis Vuitton presentation was part fashion show, part short film. Virgil’s latest collection is called ”Ebonics.” As the collection’s name suggests, it continues to support the slogan #blacklivesmatter, which marked 2020.  Fashion is not just about clothes. It’s also an attitude. Accompanied by Ibrahim Kamara’s styling, while admiring Virgil’s designs, we also found that the brand does not remain insensitive to what is happening in the world. And it’s time for my second favorite, KidSuper. The brand, which has made seven short films to present its collection, offers cross-sections from the life we live and tells them in fun language. My favorite is in the third movie, when two friends make fun of each other’s clothes. I think being able to make fun of your own design while promoting your collection is the work of a quick-wit.
