Y/PROJECT GOES GENDERLESS

DENIZ AKKAYA

Glenn Martens, who was recently appointed as the creative director of Diesel, decided to lighten the show schedule for his Y/Project brand by merging men’s and women’s lines into one collection.

The Paris-based designer will present this coed collection during Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January and June. Martens, who produced large collections during lockdown, focused on giving these designs a second life, and focused on the twisted structures that were the signature of the House. In June 2020, he launched Evergreen, an eco-friendly collection of signature designs that never go on sale.

“To further protect our brand, the fashion industry we love, we decided not to follow the fast pace of four fashion weeks a year. Y/Project will stop presenting four collections separately and combine the men and women’s collection into a larger, more sustainable collection.”

“In addition to saving time, this six-month period will give my team more freedom to explore and more time to create the intriguing designs you expect from us,” said the designer, who was supported by a 150,000 euro donation from ANDAM’s Family Fund last summer.

The change comes as Martens needs more time for sustainability, as well as “creativity and experience.” The brand, known for its experimental clothing and collaborations with Ugg, Linda Farrow and Canada Goose, has joined brands such as Givenchy, Jacquemus and Balmain with this decision.

Martens is expected to present his first collection with Diesel in the spring season of 2022, though he has not yet decided when or how the collection will be presented to the press, given the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the Coronavirus outbreak.
