NEW TREND: SKINFLUENCERS!

DENIZ AKKAYA

With the rise of skinfluencers, TikTok became the number one dermatologist of Gen Z. Welcome to SkinTok!

TikTok isn’t just a platform that has viral dance trends lead by Charli D’Amelio but also has dozens of sub-cultures like SkinTok and Gen Z looks for answers to all their skin care questions within SkinTok and skinfluencers. Consisting of Dermatologists, aestheticians and skincare enthusiasts, skinfluencers has quite a loyal audience on TikTok. #Skincare has 11 billion and the youth’s common problem #acne has 2,5 billion views!

Skinfluencers has a big audience on the platform and they have the power to decide brands’ destinies! Popular skinfluencer Hyram Yarbro who duets with people showing their skincare routines proved that skinfluencers can actually affect the sales. After Hyram dueted Kaelyn White’s video, using the Peace Out Skincare’s blackhead nose patches, the sales of the brand quadrupled in 24 hours!

When it comes to skincare, Gen Z’s choices aren’t made by the brand’s name or the label of a product but at the same time by being a cruelty free, vegan and environmental-friendly. This generation prefers affordable brands like CeraVe and The Ordinary which TikTok’s favourite skinfluencers recommend instead of nice-packaged, expensive face cream from Sephora. However, we face an issue here. Everyone has different skin type and we can’t expect a skinfluencer’s miracle worker product make the same effect on everybody. Though skinfluencers mention their recommendations are their personal view on all their videos, people still try these low-budgeted skincare routines and expect miracles.

Skinfluencers entered our lives during quarantine. Consequently, in this period where everyon listened themselves and their bodies, the interest in skincare has increased greatly. Only having 100.000 followers in March, Skincare by Hyram has more than 6 million now! If you want to be a content creator in beauty industry, it looks like TikTok is a correct place to start.

Just like fashion and sports categories, in skincare -one of the most popular categories on the platform- all content creators aren’t professionals on their areas. In fact, some content creators share potentially damaging “skincare secrets” and ignore professionals’ warnings completely. That’s where good skinfluencers stand out from the bad ones.

We have listed four trusted, doctor-supported skinfluencers for you!
